Chapter Fourteen

“Ah, here’s your nurse now,” Grady heard Travis saying as he turned the corner with the wheelchair.

The look on Poppy’s and Noah’s faces when they saw him pushing the chair toward them at the main entrance doors was priceless. A bit dazed, maybe even a little skeptical.

It happened so often Grady had gotten used to it long ago and didn’t take offense. People took one look at him, a young, tatted guy in scrubs, and their eyebrows shot up.

“They’re waiting upstairs for you,” he told them, quickly turning the wheelchair around for Poppy. “Hey, Trav.”

“Hey.” They shared a private smile, both of them operating on fumes at this point.

Their unit had been at base training all this past weekend and then again last night. They hadn’t left Portland until oh-two-hundred hours this morning, meaning both he and Travis had grabbed two hours of badly needed sleep before coming in to start their shifts. Whereas Whit and Groz were both probably still crashed out at home.

“This is my good buddy Grady,” Travis told Poppy and the sheriff. “He’s the most experienced L&D nurse here, and also a PJ in our unit, so you couldn’t be in better hands.”

Clear relief bled into Noah’s expression at the news. “That’s good to hear.”

Grady grinned. He loved what he did, was lucky to do this and Pararescue. Best of both worlds. “Let’s get you upstairs,” Grady said to Poppy, helping the sheriff ease her into the chair.

Poppy nodded and didn’t answer, busy breathing hard through another contraction, her knuckles white as she gripped her husband’s hand.

“That’s perfect, just concentrate on your breathing,” he told her, wheeling her quickly to the elevator down the hall.

“It’s happening fast,” Noah said in concern.

“How long ago did the labor start?”

“I’m not sure. She said about five hours ago, but I’m betting it was before that.” He shook his head at her in consternation as they stopped at the elevator. “She didn’t want to call while I was on duty.”

“Nothing you...could’ve done,” Poppy managed between gritted teeth. Her face was flushed, drawn tight with the pain.

Noah shot him a look that said he had a choice comeback for that, but wisely kept his mouth shut. “The contractions are about seven minutes apart or so, but some are closer together than that.”

She was definitely in active labor. It was just a question of how far things had progressed. “We’ll check everything and see where we’re at when we get her into her room.”

He helped coach her through another contraction on the way upstairs, mentally keeping track of its intensity and how long it lasted. “Here we go,” he announced, steering her into one of the private birthing rooms on the mat ward.

Two other nurses were standing by. They got Poppy up and changed into a gown while Grady gloved up and grabbed the equipment he needed. A few minutes later, he finished his exam and stood back to peel off his gloves. “You’re eighty percent effaced, and almost four centimeters dilated.
